Podcast Roundup 11/13/2022

Pew, pew, pew, pew! Well, it looks like another week has flown by and life has conspired to cram more podcasts into it while piling on additional outside activities. As I sit here at the computer there are Old English Christmas Carols playing in the background. Why? Because for the next few weeks I have an Old World Christmas concert mid December and those tunes are weird. Speaking of music, the weekend was spent in Spokane attending the Spokane Folk Festival where two of my favorite groups (Raging Grannies and Crooked Kilt) were playing. Sure Floating Crowbar was there too but a capacity crowd prevented me from getting into the auditorium 😉

Modeling. I didn’t get any significant amount of time at the bench but did get to the hobby shops to empty my wallet. The gaming store (Safari Pearl) yielded a new set of Mech Warriors and a 3D printed figure. Apparently, there is someone local printing and selling through the store and being inspired by TJ Haller, I picked up Mihida. I have no idea who, what or where she is from but was intrigued with the planking base and the two scimitars she carries. In between acts at the Folk Festival I was able to head over to HobbyTown and stocked up on a few brushes. I was tempted by the Razor Crest kits but not having my two resident kit experts with me, I passed on picking up anything.

On to the podcasts.

Scale Model Podcast Ep104 (11/5/2022) “Pricing and Trying New Things” Stuart and Terry host this episode with Geoff off being a responsible adult. This episode, much like the others from SMP, has excellent show notes. So much so, that I’m not sure if I could add anything. Of note is Testors pending 45% price increase and Eduards’ pending price increase. Stuart and Terry also cover, Mail, the Latest Hobby Announcements (my favorite was the Bugatti Type 35B), Scalemates, What’s On the Bench and Things They’ve Seen.

Plastic Posse Podcast Ep57 (11/8/2022) “Barry and Jim from Small Subjects talk MMSI Show, Black Rifle Model Worx talk Telford” Of particular note are the Jim Bates’ announcements of a Thanksgiving 72 scale in 72 hrs group build (11/25-27/2022) and the Model Mania 2023 at the Seattle, WA Museum of Flight. The interview with Barry and Jim covers how they got together doing the MMSI (organizing judging) and how the idea for the Small Subjects podcast came about. The hosts also interview the originators of the newish Black Rifle Model Worx Community Group on Facebook (Ivan, Luke, Jackson and Graham) and talk Homies, Hype and Happiness as the goals of the group. The podcast moves on to talk about the upcoming visit to Telford by JB and Jackson with show expectations, a Bovington Tank Museum visit and clubbing in London! Can you say Strawberry Gin?

On The Bench Ep151 (11/10/2022) “Scale ACT 2022” Dave, Ian and Sam Dwyer report from the ScaleACT-22 model show with a plethora of interviews. A grumpy tour guide, an interview with Show Chair Peter Davis (1st-2nd-3rd/GSB hybrid judging system used at the show), Peter Higgins (wooden ship builder), Simon Holdsworth (of ‘Painting Black without using Black’ fame), Dave Hardigan (1st time show attendee), Andrew (Specmod Model Products), Craig Emmerson & Ray Davis (more new attendees getting their 90 seconds of fame) and Clayton Ockerby (Workbench Hobbies and BentSpoke bar crawl participant). Check it out, especially the painting black without using black segment (01:07:38).

Models From Ukraine Ep6 (11/11/2022) “Ace Models” Chris is joined by Alex Clark in this episode of Models From Ukraine where they interview Alexey from Ace Models. Ace Models is as you would expect, a Ukraine model company. The history of the company, how it went from a hobby to a business and why Alexey initially chose 1:72 scale are discussed. Alexey also conveys how the war in Ukraine has affected the company with both electric and water shortages. Looking through the company’s website I’m particularly impressed by the artwork used for the kits. Check out this 1:48 BA-20. If the armored car pictures are any indication of the model quality then they should build spectacularly and I’m seriously tempted to get one. While current events there are not good, it is encouraging to see these model companies pressing on. Chris and Alex also talk Kit News (Dora Wings, Foxbot Decals, Halberd Models, MiniArt German Civilians, X-Scale Hawker Siddeley Trident 1C) before wrapping up this episode by talking about the difficulty in choosing and modeling current events without trivializing or overdoing dioramas.

ModelGeeks Podcast Ep45 (11/12/2022) “Geek Steps To Improvement, where to get advice and where NOT to get advice” The Geeks cover What’ja Working On (Frilldo’s secret squirrel project), recap MauraderCon (where Whitey learns to judge Gundam), expand and clarify the MiG Killer Group Build rules, cover New Kits, New Stuff Bought, Upcoming Shows (excitement for PaxCon), do a Hobby Shop Shout Out, and suggest glass files for the Tool & Tip of the Week. All this before getting to the main topic on steps to take to get better and where to get advice (and equally important where not to get advice). To sum it up:

  • Surround yourself with others that are better than you are.
  • Ask questions! And don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t be afraid to experiment. Practice on a paint mule.
  • Know who you can ask. Remember there is good advice and bad advice. Learn to know the difference. And for heaven’s sake, don’t believe everything you see or hear on social media!
  • When giving advice, be respectful and don’t give bad advice!
